Flower about 1/4" long. Leaves are divided into 3 long leaflets. Vine stem wraps to climb, no tendrils.

Fragrant drooping clusters of bicolor purple flowers with yellow center.

Similar Species

American Wisteria Wisteria frutescens (Wisteria macrostachya)

This plant's species name has changed from the one mentioned in most guide books.
Very similar to the Chinese Wisteria. Flower cluster more compact. Not fragrant.

Hyacinth Bean (Purple Bean, Lablab) Lablab purpureus (Dolichos lablab)
Vine with purple branches. Purple-pink flowers 1/2"-3/4" long in long clusters. Purple pods about 2" long. Leaves three large leaflets about 3" long, dark green with purple veins. Drought tolerant but hates cold. Pods and seed are edible if thoroughly boiled, change water several times.

Flower about 5/8" long can be single or multiple. Each produce a pod. Vine twists around poles without tendrils. Drought, heat, and shade  tolerant. Fixes nitrogen into soil through its roots
