Old Plainsman (Carolina Woollywhite) Hymenopappus scabiosaeus
Flower ball about 1/2" wide. Petal-like bracts shrivel as flower blooms. Single stem branches occasionally up the sides but mostly at top. Larger lower leaves are about 6" long. Upper leaves are short and thick. Plant grows to about 3 feet tall.

Flower ball about 1/2" wide without the showy petal-like bracts, pale yellow. This plant takes all spring to send up a stalk and open its buds. Stalk branches occasionally with each branch and the top of the main stalk with multiple small branches for each flower cluster. Plant grows to about 3 feet tall. Leaves linearly cut, short and thick, almost all are in the basal rosette. No large leaves.

Woolly-white (Old Plainsman) Hymenopappus artemisiifolius
Flower ball about 1/2" wide grows in clusters. Individual flowers are white to rose-pink. Showy white petal-like bracts shrivel as flower blooms. Basal leaves are about 3"-7" long. Single stem with flower branches at the top have only a few leaves that have linear lobes. Plant grows to about 3 feet tall.
