The Walnut Family have large nuts with hard shells. Types include: walnut and hickory (a pecan is in the hickory genus)

Pecan Carya illinoinensis
Pecans are cultivated with a very large variety of shell sizes and flavor. Trunks can grow several feet wide.
(Native of Texas - Taylor, Coleman, Brown, Coke)

Specimen A

Tree shown is about 40 feet tall with a 2 1/2 foot wide trunk. The shell is 1/2" to 3/4" long, incased in a tough outer "skin". This is the tiny variety that everyone loves to eat but hates to shell.

Specimen B

Tree shown is young, about 20 feet tall, and was planted by a squirrel. The shell is about 1 1/2" long, incased in a tough outer "skin".
