Base: annual, no rhizomes, no stolons (runner stem)
Blade (leaf): broad, prominent midribs, to 40cm long, .5-2.5cm wide, glabrous or sparse hairs, margin finely serrated, keeled
Sheath (leaf part encircling stem): glabrous, no ligule
Culm (main grain stem): erect to spreading, 30-100cm tall, many swollen nodes
Inflorescence: Open panicle, 10-25cm long, 5-25 appressed or spreading branches, longest branches rebranching
Spikelet: 2.8-4mm long, 1.1-2.3mm wide, 1-2 flowers, arranged in 2 rows on one side of branch
Glume: awns are variable in length from 0-20mm long but usually under 2mm
Lemma: dull tips separated by tiny hairs from the main glossy body, awns are variable in length from 0-20mm long but usually under 2mm
