Plains Coreopsis (Coreopsis, Goldenwave) Coreopsis tinctoria
1"-1 1/2" wide yellow ray petals are maroon at center. Red/maroon disk. Tip of petal has 3 lobes with the center the longest. Bracts are in 2 whirls; inner, wide triangular tip pressed up against petals, red/brown; outer, 3mm long lanceolate, green. Basal and upper leaf: very linear, pinnate or pinnate-like, leaflet farthest out is largest
These flowers will cover roadsides and ungrazed fields, grow 1-3 1/2 feet tall, blooms mid-summer.

Petals can be solid yellow, or occasionally solid maroon.

Similar Species

Goldenmane Tickseed Coreopsis basalis
1"-1 1/2" wide yellow ray petals are maroon at center. Red/maroon disk. Grows to 2 1/2 feet tall, blooms spring-early summer. Bracts are lance to oval shape, 7-9mm long. Basal leaf: simple or few pinnate lobes. Upper leaf: cut with 3-9 rounded lobes

Thelesperma

Inner Phyllaries: united 1/4 to 1/2 their length
Outer Phyllaries: herbaceous (of a soft texture, as green leaves)
Disk Corolla Lobes: often linear

Coreopsis

Inner Phyllaries: separate or nearly so, united at base to form a cup
Outer Phyllaries: very different in appearance from inner phyllaries
Disk Corolla Lobes: triangular to ovate

These two genus and their species are difficult.  If you have a reliable way to distinguish between them, I would like to hear it.

Golden-yellow flower about 2" wide. At the base of the flower, there are two types of phyllary, one is short and green, the other is red and long. Buds droop before opening. Leaves are pinnately compound, very narrow and widely spaced. Taproot is drought resistant. These plants grow to about 2 feet tall and can cover roadsides and fields.

Small yellow disk. 3 lobed ray petals are "squared". Base of flower: inner bracts red/brown and narrow; outer bracts green, narrow, and cling to inner bracts. Thread-like leaves, 1"-3" long. Leaves are pinnately compound, very narrow and clumped at stem.

This plant's Genus name has changed or is in the process of changing from the one mentioned in most guide books.
Flower 1/2"-3/4" wide, in clusters. Petals have two small lobes at tip. Plant shown is about 10" tall but can grow to 3 feet tall with enough water. Leaves are deeply divided with the end segment wider than long. Thick hollow stem can be green or red.

Horseherb (Straggler Daisy) Calyptocarpus vialis
Flower about 1/4" wide. Shade plant and ground cover forms mounds of 8-10" tall. This plant is one of the first flowers of spring and grows until hit by frost.
