Antlion Vella fallax

Body about 2" long.

Nymphs live 1-3 years at the base of sand pits where they eat insects that fall in.  They are sometimes called doodlebugs because they draw wavy lines in the sand before digging a pit.  A nymph builds a round cocoon to morph into an adult.
